The Objective
Spoons is a fast-paced card game combining matching, speed, and physical reflexes. The goal is to collect four cards of the same rank and grab a spoon before your opponents do. High-energy and hilarious, Spoons is all about speed, strategy, and the thrill of the chase.
What You Need
A standard deck of 52 playing cards
Spoons (one fewer than the number of players – so 3 players need 2 spoons, 6 players need 5 spoons)
3 to 13 players (best with 4-8 players)
A table with space in the center for the spoons
Setup
Place spoons in the center of the table, equidistant from all players
Shuffle the deck thoroughly
Deal four cards to each player
Place the remaining deck face down next to the dealer
Everyone sits in a circle around the table
How to Play
The Flow
Spoons is played in rapid succession with everyone acting simultaneously:
The dealer draws the top card from the deck, looks at it, and decides whether to keep it or pass it
If keeping it, they discard a different card face down to the player on their left
That player picks up the card, decides to keep or pass it, and passes one card to their left
This continues around the circle at speed
The last player in the circle discards their unwanted cards into a discard pile
The Goal
While cards are flying around the table, each player is trying to collect four cards of the same rank (four 7s, four Kings, etc.).
Grabbing Spoons
As soon as any player gets four of a kind, they quietly take a spoon from the center. Once one spoon is taken, all other players must immediately grab for the remaining spoons. The player left without a spoon loses the round.
The Catch
The player who gets four of a kind can be subtle or obvious when taking their spoon. Sneaky players might grab a spoon quietly, forcing other players to stay alert. Some players won't notice a spoon has been taken until several more spoons are gone!
Winning and Losing
Letters Elimination: Each time a player fails to get a spoon, they earn a letter from the word "SPOONS" (S-P-O-O-N-S). When a player has spelled the complete word, they're eliminated. The last player remaining wins.
Single Round: Simply play one round. The player who doesn't get a spoon loses, and everyone else wins.
Point System: Award points based on finishing order each round. Lowest score after a set number of rounds wins.
Strategy Tips
Keep your cards organized so you can quickly identify matches
Don't focus only on your cards – watch the center spoons peripherally
Pass cards quickly to keep the game flowing
Watch other players for tells when they've collected four of a kind
Position yourself strategically near the spoons
Sometimes it's worth going for a spoon even if you don't have four of a kind – just to avoid being last!
Variations
Tongue Spoons: Instead of grabbing spoons, players who get four of a kind stick out their tongue. Others must notice and stick out their tongues too. Last player loses.
Pig: Similar to Tongue Spoons, but players touch their nose instead of sticking out their tongue.
Kings in the Corners: Add a rule where certain cards (like Kings) can be played to the corners, adding strategic complexity.
Musical Spoons: Walk around the table while passing cards, musical chairs style.
Forking Out: Use forks, knives, or other objects instead of spoons for variety.
Team Spoons: Play in teams where teammates can signal each other when they have four of a kind.
Safety Note
While Spoons is exciting and competitive, remind players to grab spoons carefully to avoid knocking them off the table or accidentally hurting other players' hands. Plastic spoons are safer than metal for enthusiastic games!
