The Objective

Old Maid is a card-matching game where players try to form and discard pairs of cards while avoiding being left with the unmatchable "Old Maid" card at the end of the game. It's a game that keeps everyone on their toes, blending mischief, memory, and a little friendly trickery.

What You Need

  • A standard deck of 52 playing cards

  • 2 to 8 players

  • Remove one Queen from the deck (this makes one Queen the "Old Maid")

Setup

  • Remove one Queen from the deck, leaving 51 cards

  • Shuffle the deck thoroughly

  • Deal all cards to players one at a time, clockwise

  • It's okay if some players have more cards than others

How to Play

Starting the Game
Each player looks at their cards and removes any pairs (two cards of the same rank, like two 7s or two Kings). Place these pairs face down in front of you.

Taking Turns

  • The player to the left of the dealer goes first

  • They fan out their cards face down and offer them to the player on their left

  • That player draws one card without looking at the faces

  • If the drawn card forms a pair with a card in their hand, they place the pair face down

  • Play continues clockwise around the circle

Continuing Play
Players continue drawing cards from the person on their right, forming and discarding pairs. As pairs are made, players will have fewer and fewer cards.

Winning and Losing

The game continues until all pairs have been made and discarded. The player left holding the unmatchable Queen (the "Old Maid") loses the game. Everyone else wins!

Strategy Tips

  • Try to remember which cards players have drawn

  • Watch for patterns in how players react when certain cards are drawn

  • Keep a poker face when offering your cards

  • Arrange your cards to make it harder for others to guess which is the Old Maid

  • Pay attention to which cards have been paired already

Variations

Old Bachelor: Use a Jack instead of a Queen as the odd card.

Scoring Version: Play multiple rounds and keep score. The loser of each round gets one point. The player with the fewest points after several rounds wins.

Theme Decks: Use special Old Maid card decks with themed characters and pictures instead of standard playing cards.

Speed Old Maid: Set a time limit for each turn to keep the game moving quickly.
